In high-speed, wide-web biaxial stretching lines, the extrusion casting unit represents the critical boundary where a molten, amorphous polymer matrix morphs into a structured solid sheet. Whether processing BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) or BOPET (Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene Terephthalate), the stability of this transition relies entirely on one core component: the high-precision chill roll (cast roll).
As line speeds push beyond 400 to 600 m/min and film thicknesses contract to micron levels, traditional cooling rollers can no longer cope. Huatao Group's advanced chill roll architecture provides the technical advantage needed to achieve ultra-precise thermal transfer, ensuring flawless optical and mechanical properties before the sheet ever enters the stretching ovens.
While the primary role of a chill roll is rapid heat extraction, the internal morphology of PP and PET polymers requires vastly different, highly controlled cooling strategies. A premium casting system must be engineered to handle both specific thermodynamic profiles:
The BOPP Parameter: Polypropylene exits the die at approximately 230°C to 250°C and must be violently chilled to 20°C to 30°C. Slower cooling or local hot spots allow large crystal spheres (spherulites) to form, generating micro-structural stress boundaries that fracture under high-ratio transverse stretching (TDO).
The BOPET Parameter: Polyester demands an even more extreme thermal shock, dropping from 280°C–300°C down to 70°C–80°C within fractions of a second. The chill roll must instantly freeze the melt to bypass the polymer's cold crystallization window. Any failure in uniform heat extraction yields a partially brittle, opaque cast sheet prone to catastrophic line snaps.
To eliminate web thickness variations and optical haze, Huatao Group customizes its industrial rollers across three fundamental mechanical disciplines:
Standard double-shell rollers frequently suffer from thermal stratification, where a stagnant boundary layer of water reduces heat transfer efficiency near the outer sleeve.
Huatao Group implements multi-lead, multi-start internal spiral flow channels. By precision-machining these internal spirals, we force the cooling medium into a high-velocity, turbulent flow regime. This maximizes the heat transfer coefficient ($h$) and suppresses surface temperature tolerances to a strict ±0.5℃ window across the entire face length (up to 12,000 mm).
The surface of a chill roll acts as a structural mold; the hot polymer melt copies it perfectly under the pressure of pinning mechanisms (such as pinning wires or air knives).
Huatao Group rollers utilize vacuum-degassed forged alloy steel bases coated with a heavy, multi-layer electroplated hard chrome matrix (≥120um, Hardness≥60HRC). Through automated multi-stage diamond compound polishing, we achieve a flawless finish of Ra 0.005um to Ra 0.01um, preventing microscopic surface pinholes, air-pocket indentations, and optical defects.
Centrifugal forces at high running speeds amplify even the smallest structural eccentricity. This creates mechanical runout, which causes cyclic variations in the pinning wire/air knife gap, leading to chronic machine-direction (MD) thickness waves. Every Huatao roll undergoes meticulous dynamic balancing up to G0.4 or G1 ratings, compressing total mechanical runout to ≤0.015mm to ensure absolute web flatline consistency.
Huatao Group as a trusted partner to over 40 large-scale film manufacturers globally for more than 15 years, Huatao Group engineers components fully compatible as drop-in upgrades or direct OEM replacements for mainstream machinery lines, including Bruckner, Dornier, and other leading international extrusion brands.
By controlling polymer crystallization at the millisecond scale, our chill rolls allow film manufacturers to comfortably step up line speeds, confidently run ultra-thin technical gauges (2.8um - 12um), and tap into high-margin markets like EV capacitor films, solar backsheets, and optical display panels.
