Polyurethane dewatering screens are wet screening media that separate slurry into oversize and undersize streams. Water and particles small enough to pass through the openings report to the underside; retained solids travel to the discharge end. The separation is based on particle size under operating conditions — not on mineral content.
Slurry moves across the vibrating screen surface. Water and fine particles pass through the apertures; coarser solids are retained and transported to discharge.
Dewatering performance is evaluated through product moisture, water drainage rate, solids throughput, and water recovered.
Mineral recovery performance requires additional measurements: valuable-mineral content, particle-size distribution, product grade, and the proportion of valuable material reporting to the desired stream.
These are separate questions. A screen that dewaters well may still send valuable fines to an unrecovered stream.
Abrasion resistance. PU panels handle hard mineral grains in wet, abrasive tailings duty.
Elastic behaviour. Apertures move during vibration, reducing certain forms of blockage.
Engineered slot openings. Slot width, length, orientation, and open area can be configured to the duty.
Modular maintenance. Individual panels can be replaced without renewing the full deck.
Process integration. Screening can serve as one stage in a broader dewatering or recovery circuit.
PU dewatering screens are applied in tailings dewatering, fine material classification, water recovery, and selected fine mineral recovery circuits where valuable particles occur in a recoverable size fraction.
They are not a substitute for DEWATERING HYDROCYCLONES, THICKENERS, or FILTER PRESSES in duties those technologies are designed for.
Tailings management sits downstream of CRUSHING and GRINDING in the mineral processing circuit.
| Criterion | Polyurethane Dewatering Screen | Conventional Dewatering Equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Separation basis | Particle size | Varies by technology |
| Water removal | Free water | Free and bound water (technology dependent) |
| Mineral recovery | Size-based only | Mineral-specific methods available |
| Abrasion resistance | High | Depends on construction |
| Footprint | Compact | Larger for thickening/filtration |
| Best application | Classification, free water removal | Concentration, low final moisture |

| Duty | Recommended Approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Tailings dewatering | PU dewatering screen | Free water removal, size classification |
| Fine mineral recovery (coarse fraction) | PU screen + downstream recovery | Separate recoverable size fraction |
| Ultrafine mineral recovery | Dedicated recovery stage | Screen cannot retain ultrafines |
| Low final moisture | Thickening + filtration | Screen removes free water only |
| Water recovery | Screen + thickener | Combined circuit |
| Size classification | PU screen or hydrocyclone | Depends on cut point and feed |
| Industry | Typical Tailings | Key Concern | PU Suitability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Ore | Fine hematite tailings | Dewatering, water recovery | High |
| Gold | Oxide tailings | Fine retention, recovery | Medium–High |
| Copper | Sulphide tailings | Dewatering, abrasion | High |
| Coal | Fine coal tailings | Dewatering, blinding | High |
| Phosphate | Sedimentary tailings | Moisture, abrasion | High |
| Mineral Sands | Heavy mineral tailings | Fine classification | Medium–High |
| Lead-Zinc | Sulphide tailings | Fine retention | Medium–High |
| Nickel | Laterite tailings | Moisture, fine particles | Medium–High |
Six steps determine the correct configuration:
Define feed characteristics — ore type, solids concentration, feed rate, particle-size distribution, slimes, particle shape, abrasiveness, slurry chemistry.
Define the actual objective — lower moisture, water recovery, size classification, recovery of a specific fraction, or a combination.
Match aperture and panel configuration — slot width and length, orientation, open area, panel thickness, mounting system.
Check full process balance — where does undersize go, and are valuable fines recovered downstream or lost?
Run a representative trial — simultaneous feed, oversize, and undersize sampling; enough operating time to evaluate stability.
Compare total operating cost — panel price, replacement intervals, labour, downtime, water handling, downstream treatment, and value of recovered minerals.
Required information: screen model, panel dimensions and fixing details, feed material, particle-size distribution, slurry concentration, throughput, target opening, target moisture, destination of oversize and undersize streams, and assay or mineralogical data if recovery is a primary objective.
Drawings needed: panel outline with fixing detail, deck layout, and OEM part number where available.
Material selection: request PU formulation and hardness data, panel thickness, slot dimensions, and orientation specification.
MOQ: typically per panel or per deck set.
Lead time: commonly 2–4 weeks for standard panels; longer for custom moulds.
Packaging: palletised and separated to prevent deformation.
Shipping method: sea freight for volume; air freight for breakdown-critical replacement.
