The Carbon in Pulp (CIP) process is one of the most efficient and commonly used technologies in the modern gold mining industry. It is particularly suitable for low-grade and fine-disseminated gold ores where high recovery efficiency and stable operation are required.
Unlike conventional gold extraction methods that require solid-liquid separation before adsorption, the CIP process directly adsorbs dissolved gold from pulp slurry onto activated carbon. This simplifies the processing flow while improving operational efficiency and reducing overall processing costs.
A standard CIP gold processing plant generally includes the following equipment:
Each piece of equipment plays a critical role in ensuring stable gold recovery and efficient plant operation.
Raw ore is first crushed by a jaw crusher and cone crusher to reduce the particle size for downstream grinding. The crushed ore then enters a ball mill where fine grinding liberates gold particles from surrounding gangue minerals.
A spiral classifier forms a closed grinding circuit by returning oversized particles back to the ball mill for further grinding.
After grinding, the qualified slurry flows into a thickener where solid concentration is increased and overflow water is recycled back into the process.
The thickened slurry enters a pre-leaching tank where cyanide and chemical reagents dissolve gold into solution, forming gold-cyanide complexes suitable for adsorption.
The adsorption circuit is the core section of the CIP process. Multiple adsorption tanks containing activated carbon are arranged in series.
As slurry flows through the tanks, activated carbon adsorbs dissolved gold from the solution. Counter-current carbon movement improves adsorption efficiency and maximizes gold loading performance.
Loaded carbon is separated through a safety screen and transferred to the smelting section. After stripping and electrowinning, high-purity gold bullion can be produced.
Tailings slurry enters a pressure filter where solid-liquid separation takes place. Recovered water is recycled back into the plant, minimizing reagent loss and reducing environmental impact.
