Introduction

The corrugator belt, installed on the double facer of a corrugated board production line, is a component of considerable importance. Its role extends beyond simple conveyance; it is integral to the processes of pressure application, heat transfer, and moisture management. The performance of this belt directly influences the bonding quality, dimensional flatness, and overall throughput of the finished corrugated board.

1. Functional Positioning for Corrugator Belt

Positioned directly above the hot plates on the double facer, the belt operates as part of a continuously moving "sandwich" arrangement. This configuration serves two primary functions. First, it conveys the glued single-faced board and linerboard smoothly through the hot plate section while converting the linear force from the gravity rollers into uniform planar pressure—a condition essential for consistent adhesive activation. Second, the belt facilitates the escape of superheated steam generated during the gelatinization of the starch adhesive, while simultaneously absorbing and releasing moisture during its return cycle to support drying efficiency.

2. Material of Corrugator Belt 

The construction material determines the belt's operational characteristics:

  • Woven Cotton-Based Belts: Manufactured from multi-layer cotton-synthetic blends. The cotton content provides natural hygroscopic properties, while synthetic fibers contribute to tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Kevlar reinforcement may be applied to the edges for enhanced heat tolerance.

  • Needle-Punched Belts: Formed from non-woven PET or rayon fibers using the needle-punching process. These belts offer high durability and thermal stability, with premium versions incorporating Nomex edge reinforcements to withstand contact with hot plate edges.

3. Technical Specifications for Corrugator Belt

Compliance with industry standard BB/T 0022-2017 defines the following performance criteria:

  • Air Permeability: The most critical parameter. At a 0.735 kPa pressure differential, air permeability must be at least 0.9 × 10² cm³/(cm²·min·kPa) to prevent moisture entrapment and ensure proper board drying.

  • Tensile Strength and Dimensional Stability: Warp tensile strength requires ≥200 N/mm, and weft ≥100 N/mm. Warp elongation must remain within -0.8% to 0.5% to prevent excessive stretching during operation.

  • Heat Resistance: The belt must endure hot plate temperatures of 180°C–200°C. Huatao standard belts are rated to 220°C, while Kevlar-edge variants withstand up to 350°C.

  • Surface and Seam Quality: The belt surface must be flat and uniform to prevent impressions on the board. Thickness variation at the seam is limited to ≤±0.5 mm, with hot-pressed flocked or rubber-filled seams being common, and custom options available.

4. Specifications for Huatao Corrugator Belt

  • Width Range: 1600 mm – 3300 mm

  • Maximum Line Speed: 450 m/min

  • Thickness Range: 8.5 mm – 10 mm

5. Maintenance and Operational Precautions for Corrugator Belt 

  • Break-in Procedure: Following installation, new belts should undergo a low-speed warm-up period of at least 30 minutes at 20–30 m/min to stabilize the fabric structure and prevent initial slippage.

  • Shutdown Protocol: During any production halt, the belt must be lifted from the hot plates to avoid localized overheating, which can cause premature aging, cracking, or burn damage.

  • Cleaning and Tracking: For woven belts, brushes or scrapers may be used for adhesive residue removal. However, needle-punched belts require gentler cleaning—stiff brushes and scraping are strictly prohibited to prevent fiber shedding and delamination. Edge wear should be repaired with high-temperature adhesive, and severe misalignment may necessitate automatic tracking devices.

  • Purchasing Guidance: Products with good breathability and anti-static treatment are recommended to reduce dust accumulation and base paper slippage caused by static charges.
