A shredder machine is a hydraulic system designed to propel material onto a rotating rotor equipped with blades. The size of the shredded fraction is determined by the screen, or sieve, installed beneath the cutting unit. Depending on the screen opening, the output particle size can range from 15 to 100 mm.

Using a single shaft shredder as an example, material enters through the material inlet (A) and falls into the crushing chamber (B). A pusher (C) continuously presses the material against the rotor (D). The rotor rotates at high speed, shearing and compressing the material with the assistance of counter knives. Through tearing, fracturing, and shearing, the material is reduced to the desired size and then discharged through the screen (E). This is the straightforward working principle of the shredder machine. Cross-cut shredders are not discussed in this article.

Belt conveyors and material discharge blowers are available based on customer requirements. They simplify the shredding process. Other optional features include enclosed infeed hoppers, special screens, special blades, and special rotors.

The rotor is the core part of the industrial shredder. It is made of cold work die steel, offering high wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and a fine arrangement of knives. These features ensure a sharp cutting edge and high output quality. Other essential components include the transmission system (gear reducer and motor), bearings, screen, safety system, and control system.
