How are electromagnetic heating rollers (induction heating roller) designed?

 

 

Many machines utilize a large number of rollers, most of which do not require heating, but a few do.

Designing the optimal heated roller is a fundamental skill that thermal roller engineers must master. Typically, designing the most suitable heated roller requires considering the following aspects:

First, it is essential to understand the industry and specific process in which the heated roller will be used. Common industries using heated rollers include papermaking, printing, copying, textiles, rubber, plastics, chemical fibers, packaging, non-woven fabrics, lithium batteries, automotive, building materials, and various composite materials. Common processes include preheating, drying, shaping, lamination, embossing, calendering, and compounding. Once the industry and process are determined, the general requirements for the heated roller become clear.

Second, it is crucial to understand the basic process conditions during the use of the heated roller. For example, the product being manufactured and its main physical and chemical properties; the width and thickness of the product; the commonly used roller surface temperature and temperature accuracy; production line speed; working pressure; and the roller mounting method (single guide roller, steel roller-to-steel roller contact, or steel roller-to-rubber roller contact), etc.

Third, the mechanical requirements of the roller must be defined. For example, roller dimensions (diameter, roller surface length, bearing dimensions); roller surface treatment requirements (hard chrome, Teflon, ceramic, etc.); and mechanical parameters such as surface hardness, roughness, and runout.

Fourth, based on the above information, the appropriate heating method can be determined.

In terms of roller surface temperature, if the required temperature is very low (≤100℃), any heating method can be chosen; if the temperature is between 100 and 160℃, water heating rollers cannot be used, but steam heating, thermal oil heating, electric heating, and electromagnetic induction heating are possible. If the roller surface temperature is greater than 160℃, steam heating is usually not chosen because the temperature and pressure of steam are strictly correlated. For example, at 180℃, the steam pressure is 10 bar, and due to temperature differences on the roller surface, heating with 10 bar steam generally does not result in a roller surface temperature exceeding 160℃. If the roller surface temperature exceeds 250℃, due to the limitations of thermal oil performance, oil heating is rarely used. In this case, the only options are electric heating and electromagnetic heating. From the perspective of the operating environment, steam rollers and oil rollers are not suitable if cleanliness is a requirement.

In terms of temperature accuracy, electromagnetic heating rollers generally offer higher precision, while the accuracy of thermal oil rollers gradually decreases after prolonged use.

Considering external conditions, if there is no existing boiler for heating, or if building a new boiler is not permitted, steam rollers should not be chosen.

Once the heating method is determined, the subsequent design of the heating roller is a standard process. For typical users choosing a heating roller, understanding the above information is sufficient.
