In the wet end of a Fourdrinier paper machine, the initial fractions of a second decide the ultimate quality of the paper web. Positioned directly underneath the headbox slice lips, the breast roll (or breast roller) serves as the absolute physical starting point of the forming section.
Because it bears the combined mechanical load of high-velocity stock jet impact and high-tension forming fabrics, any micro-deflection or surface wear on this critical roller will result in chronic cross-directional (CD) basis weight variations and poor fiber formation.
The breast roll is much more than a simple return conveyor for the forming fabric. It handles three vital fluid-dynamic and mechanical responsibilities:
Supporting the Forming Fabric & Jet Impact: It serves as the primary turning anchor for the moving wire mesh, absorbing the heavy downward force of the fiber stock jetting out from the headbox.
Managing Initial Dewatering (The Drainage Moat): As the stock hits the wire directly above or just after the top dead center of the breast roll, a massive volume of white water is instantly discharged via centrifugal pumping action and localized vacuum. This initial drainage layout fixes the wire-side fiber orientation.
Maintaining Web Flatline Profile: The roller must remain perfectly straight under hundreds of kilonewtons of wire tension. Any bowing or flexing across a wide face length instantly alters the wire gap, creating thick or thin bands in the sheet.

Because a breast roll is supported only by bearings at its outer ends, the heavy tension of the forming wire naturally tries to bow the roll toward the couch side. To compensate for this mechanical bending moment, Huatao Group applies precise parabolic crowning to the roller core.
