In packaging ink manufacturing, filtration quality has a direct impact on production stability, equipment maintenance, and final product quality. When filtration equipment becomes overloaded or requires frequent maintenance, production interruptions can quickly increase operating costs.
A packaging ink manufacturer in Vietnam was facing this challenge with an existing filtration system consisting of four 5-micron bag filters. As the equipment aged, frequent bag replacement and maintenance interruptions began affecting production efficiency.
The manufacturer needed a practical solution that could improve the performance of the existing filtration process without completely replacing the downstream equipment.
The existing 5-micron bag filters were responsible for fine filtration, but a large quantity of relatively coarse particles was reaching the bags before being removed.
This resulted in faster filter loading and more frequent bag changes.
The main challenges included:
The customer therefore looked for a pre-filtration solution capable of removing larger particles before the existing fine filtration stage.
Based on the customer's process requirements, Huatao designed a two-stage filtration configuration.
An internal-scraper self-cleaning filter was installed as the primary pre-filtration stage.
The scraper filter is designed to continuously remove accumulated particles from the filter surface, allowing the filtration process to continue with limited manual intervention.
By removing larger particles at approximately the 100-micron level, the pre-filter reduces the solids load entering the downstream fine filtration equipment.
The second stage uses a bag filtration system working together with the customer's existing 5-micron filtration process.
This staged approach allows the filtration system to handle different particle sizes more efficiently instead of relying entirely on the fine filter bags.
The basic filtration concept is:
Packaging Ink → Coarse Particle Removal → Self-Cleaning Pre-Filtration → Fine Bag Filtration → Production Process
The self-cleaning scraper filter captures larger particles before they reach the 5-micron bag filters.
As a result, the downstream bags can operate under a lower solids loading condition, helping extend their service life and reduce the frequency of replacement.
This is an important advantage for continuous packaging ink production, where filtration interruptions can directly affect production capacity.
The customized filtration solution can provide several operational benefits.
Removing larger particles before the fine filtration stage helps reduce premature loading of the 5-micron filter bags.
With fewer filter bag replacements required, operators can spend less time on routine filtration maintenance.
A properly designed pre-filtration stage helps maintain more consistent filtration conditions and pressure throughout the production process.
Reducing unnecessary filtration stoppages can help keep production lines running for longer periods.
Longer filter bag life, reduced labor requirements, and fewer production interruptions can contribute to improved overall filtration economics.
For packaging ink filtration, using a single fine filtration stage may not always be the most efficient approach when the incoming material contains a significant quantity of larger particles.
A staged filtration system allows each filtration component to focus on a specific particle range.
Instead of continuously loading a 5-micron bag filter with larger solids, the upstream self-cleaning filter removes the coarse contaminants first. The downstream fine filter can then focus on the final filtration requirement.
This approach can improve both filtration efficiency and equipment utilization.
One of the key advantages of this project was that the customer did not necessarily need to replace the entire existing filtration system.
By adding an appropriate self-cleaning pre-filter ahead of the existing fine filtration stage, the manufacturer could improve the overall filtration process while continuing to utilize downstream equipment.
This demonstrates how a customized filtration upgrade can sometimes provide a more practical solution than a complete system replacement.
Every ink manufacturing process has different requirements for flow rate, viscosity, particle size, filtration accuracy, operating pressure, and cleaning method.
Huatao provides customized industrial filtration solutions based on actual process conditions.
For packaging ink manufacturers experiencing frequent filter replacement, unstable pressure, high maintenance costs, or filtration-related downtime, a properly designed pre-filtration and fine-filtration system can provide an effective way to improve production efficiency.
