Single Shaft Shredder Technology: From Bulky Waste to Controlled Feedstock

As recycling facilities process larger volumes and increasingly varied waste streams, stable material preparation has become an important part of the overall recycling process. Single shaft shredders are designed to address this requirement by converting bulky and irregular feedstock into controlled-size material.

A typical single shaft shredding system consists of a feeding hopper, hydraulic pusher, single rotor, cutting knives, fixed counter-knives, screen, drive system and electrical controls.

Controlled Cutting Process

Material is introduced into the hopper and pushed toward the rotor. The rotating knives work against stationary counter-knives, creating repeated cutting and shearing actions.

After the initial reduction, material reaches the screen located below the rotor. Only particles that meet the selected size requirement can pass through. Larger pieces remain in the chamber and continue through the cutting cycle. This principle allows the output to be regulated according to the selected screen specification.

Designed for Diverse Recycling Materials

Depending on configuration, single shaft shredders can be applied to plastic lumps, pipes, containers, pallets, film rolls, woven bags, wood waste, rubber, paper, cardboard, textile scrap and selected industrial waste.

In a plastic recycling line, the shredded material can proceed to washing, drying, granulation or extrusion. In other applications, the output may be directed to screening, separation, fuel preparation or further size reduction.

Configuration Matters

There is no universal configuration for every recycling project. Material density, hardness, feed dimensions, required throughput and target particle size all influence the machine design.

Rotor diameter, knife configuration, hydraulic pushing force, motor power and screen opening should therefore be considered together.

The correct approach is to evaluate the shredder as part of the complete processing line. Proper coordination between feeding, shredding, conveying and downstream equipment can create a more stable production process and improve material handling efficiency.
