After talking with different glass tempering plants, I've noticed something interesting.
The problem isn't always the same.
One factory may be dealing with roller marks every week.
Another may have rollers that don't last as long as expected.
Another may rarely have surface problems but has trouble with roller alignment.
And then there are the plants that have experienced an unexpected roller breakage during production.
So I wanted to ask a simple question:
Which roller problem causes you the most trouble?
Let's start with the most visible one.
When marks start appearing on tempered glass, the roller surface is one of the things I would check.
Not necessarily because the roller is damaged.
Sometimes there are deposits on the surface.
Sometimes there is wear.
Sometimes the surface condition has changed after a long period of production.
And sometimes the roller isn't the real cause at all.
That's why it's important to look at the roller together with the rest of the process.
This is the problem nobody wants to deal with during production.
A broken roller can mean much more than replacing one ceramic tube.
The line may need to stop.
Broken glass may need to be cleared.
The roller table needs to be checked.
And the maintenance team has to determine whether other rollers have been affected.
After the immediate problem is solved, I would always ask one more question:
Why did it break?
If the cause isn't understood, the next roller may end up in the same situation.

Another question I hear quite often is:
"Why aren't our rollers lasting as long as they used to?"
This is where the maintenance history becomes useful.
Don't just look at the latest roller.
Look at the last 10 or 20 replacements.
Are they failing earlier?
Are they failing in the same area?
Did production volume increase?
Did the glass type change?
Were there changes to the furnace or maintenance procedure?
Sometimes the answer isn't in the roller itself.
This one can be easy to miss.
A roller can be manufactured correctly and still cause trouble if it isn't installed or aligned properly.
Even a small difference between rollers can affect how glass moves through the furnace.
If the glass starts rocking, drifting or moving differently, I would check the roller table before making too many changes to the furnace settings.
The rollers need to work together.
Not individually.
This is probably the situation I would investigate most carefully.
Imagine a roller fails in position No. 25.
You replace it.
Some time later, the replacement roller develops a similar problem.
Then another roller is installed there.
And the same thing happens again.
At that point, I wouldn't keep blaming the roller.
I'd start looking at the position.
Alignment?
Installation?
Drive connection?
Local temperature?
Something else affecting that section of the furnace?
Replacing the roller may solve the immediate problem.
Finding out why that position keeps causing trouble is much more valuable.
