Brewing beer creates more than beer.
Every production cycle also leaves behind brewer’s spent grain (BSG) — a valuable organic by-product, but one that can become difficult to manage when it contains a large amount of water.
Fresh spent grain is typically very wet, which can create several practical challenges:
- Difficult storage
- Heavy transportation loads
- Odor and spoilage concerns
- Higher drying requirements
- More complicated material handling
The problem is not always the spent grain itself.
It is the water inside it.
A Screw Press Can Change the Process
A spent grain screw press uses continuous mechanical compression to remove free water from wet BSG.
The working principle is simple:
Wet BSG → Conveying → Compression → Liquid Separation → Dewatered BSG
The rotating screw gradually moves the spent grain through the pressing chamber.
As compression increases, free liquid passes through the screen while the concentrated solid material continues toward the discharge outlet.
For suitable BSG applications, the feed material may be around 80–85% moisture, while the dewatered material can commonly reach approximately 55–60% moisture, depending on the grain characteristics and operating conditions.
The result is a more manageable material for transportation, storage, drying, or further utilization.
What Can Happen to Dewatered BSG?
Dewatering is not the final destination.
It can be the first step toward resource recovery.
Depending on the material composition and local requirements, dewatered spent grain may be further processed for:
Animal Feed
Suitable spent grain can be supplied to livestock-related applications.
Feed Pellet Production
Further drying and processing can prepare the material for pelletizing.
Biomass Applications
Dewatered organic material may be considered for certain biomass utilization routes.
Mushroom Cultivation
Spent grain can be explored as an organic substrate component for suitable cultivation processes.
Further Drying
When a much lower moisture content is required, mechanical dewatering can be followed by thermal drying.
Designed for Continuous BSG Dewatering
Spent grain contains fibers and fine particles, so equipment configuration matters.
A suitable screw press can be designed with:
- Material-appropriate screen configuration
- Progressive screw compression
- Adjustable discharge pressure
- Continuous feeding and discharge
- SS304 material-contact components
- Optional feeding and control systems
- Customized capacity and operating parameters
The actual equipment selection should be based on BSG production volume, feed moisture, particle characteristics, required final moisture, and downstream processing requirements.
From Brewing By-Product to Usable Material
The process can be viewed simply:
Brewing → Wet Spent Grain → Mechanical Dewatering → Lower Moisture → Further Processing → Resource Recovery
For breweries producing spent grain every day, removing excess water before the next stage can make the entire handling process more practical.
The goal is not simply to make BSG “dry.”
The goal is to make it easier to handle, transport, process, and reuse.
