Introduction to Vacuum Press Rolls
In modern papermaking, the vacuum press roll — frequently termed a suction press roll — serves as a high-precision dewatering unit positioned within the press section of a paper machine. Its outer shell is constructed from corrosion-resistant alloys such as stainless steel or bronze and contains thousands of accurately drilled holes arranged in a staggered pattern. Inside the roll assembly, a stationary suction box connected to an external vacuum pump generates a regulated negative pressure zone. As the roll rotates around this fixed internal box, water is extracted radially through the perforations, significantly improving water removal from the wet paper web.
Operational Function
The primary function of this component is to eliminate water from the wet paper web more effectively than a standard plain press roll. When the web, placed between two press felts, travels across the suction zone, the applied vacuum — typically maintained between 15 and 25 inches of mercury — counteracts capillary resistance within the sheet structure. This suction action draws free water from the paper web into the adjacent felt and subsequently through the roll shell. This mechanical and vacuum-assisted dewatering process delivers three significant operational benefits: raising sheet solids content before the dryer section by approximately 5 to 8 percentage points per press nip, lowering steam consumption within the drying section, and enhancing fiber bonding along with overall sheet strength due to more uniform moisture distribution across the web.
Performance Features
The vacuum press roll offers four distinctive performance advantages.
1)its high hydraulic removal efficiency means the vacuum actively extracts water rather than depending exclusively on mechanical pressure, thereby reducing the risk of sheet crushing within the nip.
2)suction minimizes two-sidedness by consistently removing fines and fillers from both surfaces of the web, producing more uniform paper quality.
3) the vacuum zone can be precisely located and profiled, allowing machine operators to tailor water removal across both the machine direction and sheet width.
4) contemporary vacuum press rolls are dynamically balanced and engineered for high-speed paper machines operating at speeds exceeding 2,000 meters per minute.
Maintenance Precautions
Proper maintenance is critical for reliable long-term operation.
1)Drill holes are vulnerable to obstruction by stickies, pitch, and fines; regular cleaning using high-pressure oscillating showers operating at 80 to 120 bar, along with edge doctoring, is mandatory.
2)Cyclic loading as the rotating shell passes over the stationary suction box induces alternating stresses within the roll structure; routine non-destructive testing — including dye penetrant, eddy current, or ultrasonic inspection — is essential to detect micro-cracks before catastrophic shell failure occurs.
3)The sealing strips inside the roll, typically manufactured from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, wear continuously against the rotating shell; worn seals lead to vacuum leakage, increased energy consumption, and uneven dewatering. Seal clearance must be inspected on a weekly basis.
4)Aggressive suction can drive contaminants deep into the felt structure; proper felt conditioning including Uhle boxes and shower systems must be maintained to prevent felt filling.
5) never service a vacuum roll without isolating the drive motor and vacuum pump, as residual pressure and rotating components present serious entanglement and impact hazards.
