Global waste tyre volumes continue to rise, but so do recycling capabilities.
An estimated 1.5 billion tyres will reach the end of their service life by 2027. Without effective recycling infrastructure, these tyres become environmental liabilities. However, advances in waste tyre shredder machine technology are rapidly changing the economics of tyre recovery.
Unlike traditional single-stage crushers, modern tyre shredders are engineered for:
Selective size reduction – producing uniform chips for specific downstream applications
Aggressive wire liberation – recovering clean, saleable steel without damaging equipment
Low energy per tonne – typically 30–50 kWh per tonne of whole tyres processed

From waste to revenue stream
Once processed through a tyre shredder, the resulting materials follow distinct high-value paths. Rubber granules between 1mm and 4mm serve as infill for artificial sports fields – a market growing at over 5% annually. Larger 5–15mm chips become raw material for rubber-modified asphalt, which offers better skid resistance and lower road noise. Even the separated textile fibre is increasingly used as a lightweight filler or alternative fuel in cement kilns.
Regulatory tailwinds
The European Union’s End-of-Life Vehicle Directive and Landfill Directive effectively prohibit whole tyre disposal. Similar bans exist in 11 U.S. states, including California and Washington. As a result, recycling rates in regulated regions have exceeded 90%, with shredding as the mandatory first step.

A practical investment view
For recyclers and waste management operators, a tyre shredder line represents predictable operating leverage. Input costs are low – often negative, as tyre collection can generate gate fees of USD 30–100 per tonne. Outputs include three revenue-generating streams: rubber granule, recovered steel, and in some cases, clean fibre.
Tyre shredder equipment costs vary by capacity and automation level, but modular lines starting at 500 kg/hour are now available for entry-level operations, while industrial systems exceed 5 tonnes/hour.
