At first glance, there may be little reason for a distillery to invest in a dewatering machine.
In many markets, wet distiller’s grains already have an established outlet. Farmers collect the material directly from the distillery, arrange their own transportation and purchase it according to the local market price.
From the distillery’s perspective, the calculation seems straightforward:
The farmer collects it. The farmer pays the freight. Wet and dry products may generate similar revenue. So why change the process?
It is a reasonable question.
And in some cases, the answer may genuinely be: you do not need to.
But the value of dewatering is not necessarily found in getting a higher price per ton.
The bigger question is what happens when the market, weather, storage conditions or collection schedule changes.
Wet distiller’s grains can contain more than 80% moisture, yet they remain an important feedstock for many livestock operations.
A common model is simple:
Distillery → Wet Distiller’s Grains → Local Farm → Animal Feed
Farmers arrive with trucks, collect the material and take it away.
When this system works consistently, the distillery may have little direct transportation expense.
There is also an important economic consideration.
Because wet material contains much more water, it weighs considerably more. A dry product weighs less but may have a different price per ton. Depending on the local market, the total value of wet and dry material can therefore be relatively close.
In other words, dewatering does not automatically mean higher revenue per transaction.
So where does the value come from?
Wet distiller’s grains have one major limitation:
They are highly time-sensitive.
With moisture levels often above 80%, the material is difficult to store for extended periods without appropriate handling and preservation.
If farmers collect the grains every day, the system works.
But what happens when they do not?
A delayed pickup, heavy rain, poor road conditions, seasonal changes or reduced demand can quickly turn a routine byproduct into a storage problem.
The material begins accumulating.
Odor can develop.
Handling becomes more difficult.
And the distillery may have limited time to find another outlet.
This is where mechanical dewatering changes the equation.
By reducing moisture, a screw press can produce a more manageable solid fraction, potentially bringing the material into a range of approximately 50–65% moisture, depending on the feed characteristics and operating conditions.
The objective is not simply to make the grain “dry."
It is to create more flexibility between production and final disposal or utilization.
Wet material naturally favors nearby customers.
Transporting a large amount of water over longer distances can quickly increase logistics requirements and reduce the economic attractiveness of the material.
Consider a simplified example:
A truck carrying 10 tons of wet distiller’s grains may be carrying approximately 8 tons of water.
That means the transportation distance becomes an important part of the economics.
After dewatering, more of the truck’s payload consists of useful solid material.
This can potentially make longer-distance transportation more practical and open opportunities beyond nearby livestock farms.
Potential users may include:
The principle is simple:
A smaller dependence on nearby buyers can mean a broader potential market.
Commodity markets do not remain static.
Demand from livestock farms can change with feed prices, livestock margins, weather and seasonal conditions.
If a distillery depends entirely on one outlet for wet grains, a change in that market can quickly become a problem.
Dewatering creates another possibility.
Instead of having only one route:
Wet Grain → Local Farm
the material can potentially enter several pathways:
Dewatered Grain → Animal Feed
Dewatered Grain → Fertilizer / Composting
Dewatered Grain → Biomass Utilization
Dewatered Grain → Further Drying and Processing
This does not guarantee a higher selling price.
What it can provide is greater flexibility in how and when the material is utilized.
Another factor is changing customer requirements.
For livestock farms, wet distiller’s grains may be perfectly acceptable when the material can be collected and consumed quickly.
Other users may have different requirements.
Fertilizer processors, pellet manufacturers and other downstream users may pay closer attention to moisture because excess water increases their own handling, transportation or processing costs.
As a result, the market for wet material may not always be as broad as the market for a more concentrated solid product.
The question is therefore not simply:
“Can I sell wet grain today?"
It is also:
“How many different customers could I sell to if I had better control over moisture?"
This brings us back to the original question.
If wet and dewatered products generate similar revenue, why purchase a machine?
The answer depends entirely on the individual operation.
The financial value may come from factors that do not appear in the selling price per ton:
More storage flexibility
More potential buyers
Longer transportation distances
Less dependence on same-day pickup
Greater flexibility when market prices change
An alternative outlet when existing customers cannot take the material
Better control over accumulated byproduct
In other words, the investment is not necessarily about making every ton more expensive.
It can be about reducing dependence on a single way of selling every ton.
A screw press is not automatically the right solution for every distillery.
If wet distiller’s grains are collected reliably every day, there is consistent local demand, the material does not accumulate and the existing sales channel works well, additional dewatering may provide limited economic benefit.
But the situation changes when a distillery experiences:
In these situations, it may be worth calculating the actual cost of the current system and comparing it with a mechanical dewatering solution.
For many distilleries, the more useful question is:
How much control do you have over your distiller’s grains after they leave the production line?
Wet grains may be the most convenient solution when the market is reliable.
Dewatered grains may become valuable when storage, transportation, customer requirements or market conditions demand greater flexibility.
A screw press does not have to replace the existing farmer-collection model.
It can serve as a backup and processing option when the normal route is no longer enough.
