Every brewing day starts with grain, water and energy. But once the beer is made, another material remains: brewer’s spent grain.

For many breweries, the routine is straightforward. A farmer collects the spent grain, a truck takes it away, and production continues.

Fresh spent grain can contain around 80% moisture or more, depending on the brewing process. So when breweries move wet spent grain, they are not only transporting a useful organic material. They are also paying to move a substantial amount of water.

Dewatering Changes the Equation

As the screw moves the material forward, pressure gradually increases. Water passes through the screen, while the concentrated solids continue toward the discharge outlet.

Transportation

Reducing excess water means less unnecessary weight to move. For breweries sending spent grain off-site every day, this can make transportation more efficient.

Storage and Handling

Wet organic materials can be difficult to store and manage. A more concentrated material is generally easier to handle, although actual storage performance depends on moisture, temperature and hygiene conditions.

Animal Feed

Spent grain is widely used as an animal feed ingredient. Dewatering can make the material more convenient to collect, transport and process.

Further Resource Recovery

Depending on the material and local requirements, dewatered spent grain can also be considered for composting, anaerobic digestion, biogas production, drying or other further processing.

This means a screw press does more than remove water.

It can become one part of a broader brewery resource recovery system.

A Different Way to Look at Spent Grain

Consider the process:

Brewing → Spent Grain → Dewatering → Lower Moisture → Easier Handling → Resource Recovery

Compared with:

Brewing → Wet Waste → Transportation → Disposal

The difference is not simply technical. It is a different way of managing a brewery by-product.

For breweries producing 1, 2, 5, 10 or more tons of spent grain per day, moisture is worth calculating carefully.

How much does it cost to transport?
How is it currently stored or collected?
Could removing excess water improve the economics?
