Why Is My Hydrocyclone Roping?
If you've ever walked up to your hydrocyclone and seen the underflow discharging as a thick, dense "rope" rather than a hollow cone spray, you've experienced roping—one of the most common and frustrating operating problems in mineral processing.
Roping indicates that the internal air core has collapsed, the spiraling motion is almost lost, and classification efficiency has severely degraded. When roping occurs, coarse particles are misplaced to the overflow, cut size (d50) increases, and the entire circuit loses stability.
The good news: roping is almost always fixable—often without major equipment changes.

What Is Hydrocyclone Roping?
Normal spray discharge:
Hollow cone shape, 20–60° angle
Fine mist at center (air core)
Even, consistent discharge
Roping discharge:
Dense, cylindrical "rope" of solids
No hollow center (air core collapsed)
Tangled, twisting stream
May be intermittent or continuous
Visual field check: If underflow looks like a solid cylinder of wet sand rather than a fan-shaped spray—you're roping.
Common Operational Causes of Roping
Apex Size Too Small – The apex can't keep up with solids discharge.
Feed Solids Concentration Too High – High density overloads the apex.
Feed Particle Size Too Coarse – Coarser particles promote roping.
Worn or Oversized Spigot – Reduced discharge velocity causes accumulation.
Excessive Feed Pressure – Can collapse the air core.
High Ultrafine Fines Content – Viscous slurry limits air core stability.
The Critical Geometric Ratio
The apex-to-vortex diameter ratio is the single most important geometric factor:
Ratios below 0.34 → almost always roping
Ratios above 0.50 → always spray
Intermediate (0.34–0.50) → depends on feed conditions
Field insight: Don't rely only on the pressure gauge—walk to the cyclone and look at the underflow discharge pattern with your own eyes.
The First Action: Dilution
When roping occurs, open the dilution water valve and watch for 1–2 minutes. If roping stops, the problem is concentration-related. If it continues, then consider spigot size or pump pressure.
Corrective Actions to Eliminate Roping
Immediate Actions:
Add dilution water
Reduce feed pressure
Check for blockage
Component Adjustments:
Increase Apex Size – Most common hardware fix. Go up 2–4 mm.
Step-by-Step Adjustment – Change one size at a time, run 30–60 minutes, observe.
Replace Worn Vortex Finder – If spigot changes don't solve it.
Diagnostic Summary
| Root Cause | Diagnostic Indicator | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Apex too small | Roping despite normal feed | Increase apex by 2–4 mm |
| Feed concentration high | Roping correlates with density spikes | Add dilution water |
| Feed too coarse | Coarse PSD coincides with roping | Consider larger apex |
| Vortex finder worn | Roping persists after spigot changes | Replace vortex finder |
| Excessive pressure | Pressure above design | Reduce pump speed |
