A screw making machine is a specialized piece of equipment used to manufacture screws efficiently and accurately from metal wire or rod. The process generally begins with feeding a continuous length of metal wire into the machine. The wire is straightened, cut to a predetermined length, and then formed into the basic shape of the screw through a series of dies. The screw head is usually produced by cold heading or forging, in which pressure is applied to the metal to form the required head shape, such as a round, hexagonal, or countersunk head.
After the head is formed, the blank is transferred to the threading section. In this stage, the machine creates threads on the shank by either cutting or, more commonly, rolling the material between specially shaped dies. Thread rolling forms the threads by applying high pressure and displacing the metal, resulting in strong and precise threads without removing material. Depending on the screw design, additional operations such as slotting, recess forming, pointing, or trimming may also be carried out.
Modern screw making machines use mechanical or servo-driven systems to coordinate feeding, cutting, forming, and threading operations at high speed. Sensors and automatic control systems help maintain consistent dimensions and detect production problems. Finally, the finished screws are discharged from the machine for inspection, heat treatment, surface finishing, or packaging. Through these coordinated processes, a screw making machine can produce large quantities of uniform, high-quality screws with good dimensional accuracy and production efficiency.
