A brewery produces beer.
But once the brewing process is finished, there is another material left behind:
Wet spent grain.
It looks like a valuable by-product.
But look closer.
A large part of that material is water.
That means every truck leaving the brewery may be carrying not only spent grain, but also a considerable amount of unnecessary weight.
And that creates a simple question:
Why pay to move water when you can remove part of it first?
A screw press provides continuous mechanical dewatering for wet spent grain.
The process is straightforward:
Wet Spent Grain → Screw Conveying → Compression → Water Separation → Dewatered Spent Grain
The rotating screw gradually moves the material through the pressing chamber.
As pressure increases, free liquid passes through the screen while the concentrated spent grain moves toward the discharge outlet.
No complicated chemical process.
No waiting for natural drainage.
Just continuous mechanical conveying and compression.
The purpose is not simply to make the material “drier.”
It is to make the spent grain easier to manage.
Less water can mean:
Less material weight to handle
Less unnecessary water transported
Easier storage and conveying
More convenient downstream processing
Greater flexibility for reuse
For breweries that send spent grain to farms, feed applications, composting facilities, biogas plants or drying systems, reducing excess moisture can make the next stage easier to manage.
A screw press is not designed to replace thermal drying when a very low final moisture content is required.
Instead, it can work as a pre-treatment stage.
For example:
Brewing → Wet Spent Grain → Screw Press → Dewatering → Further Processing
If lower moisture is required, thermal drying can follow the mechanical dewatering stage.
This combination allows each process to do what it does best:
Mechanical pressing removes free water.
Thermal drying handles the remaining moisture.
Once the moisture has been reduced, the spent grain can be easier to handle for different applications, depending on its composition and local requirements.
Potential routes include:
So perhaps the question is not:
“How do we get rid of our spent grain?”
A better question may be:
“How can we improve the material before it leaves the brewery?”
Sometimes, waste reduction starts with one very simple step:
Remove the water before you pay to move it.
How does your brewery currently handle spent grain?
Farmer collection, animal feed, disposal, drying, or another solution?
